Tendinitis (or tendonitis) is inflammation of a tendon — the fibrous cord that connects muscle to bone. In the hand and wrist, the most commonly affected tendons are the extensor tendons on the back of the hand (often from repetitive gripping or computer use), the flexor tendons in the palm and wrist, and the abductor and extensor tendons at the base of the thumb (De Quervain’s tendinitis, associated with texting and scrolling movements).

Tendinitis presents as localized pain over the affected tendon, worsened by the movements that strain it, with variable swelling and warmth over the area. Without treatment, acute tendinitis can progress to chronic tendinopathy — a degenerative change in the tendon structure that is more difficult to treat.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a broad term for conditions that cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the joints. In the hand, the most common forms are osteoarthritis, which develops when joint cartilage wears down over time, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition that causes the body to attack the joints. Both can lead to swelling, reduced flexibility, grip weakness, and difficulty with everyday tasks such as opening jars, writing, or typing.
